Tips for getting the most out of YipYipZip, answers to common problems, and how to reach us.

Tips

Searching for recipes

Use the single search box to search across recipe name, ingredients, tags and credits. For finer control, open advanced search to combine multiple filters.

Linking one recipe to another

While editing instructions, you can link to another recipe in your collection. Linked recipes appear as tappable references so you can jump between, say, a sauce and the dish that uses it, and they are included when you export.

Adding a photo instead of retyping

Attach a photo or screenshot of an existing recipe directly to its ingredients or instructions, which is great for recipe cards and cookbook pages. JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, AVIF and TIFF are supported, plus HEIC/HEIF on iOS and macOS.

Marking a recipe secret

Mark a recipe as secret to keep it out of exports entirely. Cherished family dishes stay private even when you share or back up the rest of your collection.

Sharing and importing recipes

Export any recipe as a .yipyipzip file, a compact zip containing the recipe and any recipes it links to. To import one you received, open the file with YipYipZip and it is added to your collection.

Shopping list and meal planner

Add ingredients straight from a recipe to the shopping list, manage the list separately, and turn on auto-delete for checked items if you like. The meal planner lets you assign meals to dates and drag them onto days of the week.

Moving to a new device

Use Backup and Restore to save your whole collection and settings to a backup file. Move that file to your new device or another platform and restore it there.

Troubleshooting

A .yipyipzip file will not import. What should I check?

Make sure it is a genuine .yipyipzip file exported from the app. A file that was renamed or re-zipped by hand will not import. Try downloading or receiving it again in case it was corrupted in transit. If it still fails, ask the sender to re-export the recipe from their app.

macOS says the app can’t be opened because the developer is unidentified.

This is the standard Gatekeeper warning for unsigned apps. Right-click (or Control-click) the app and choose Open, then confirm. Alternatively, open System Settings, go to Privacy & Security, and choose Open Anyway next to the blocked app.

Windows shows a SmartScreen warning when I run the installer.

SmartScreen flags installers it does not recognize. Click "More info", then "Run anyway" to proceed with the installation.

A recipe is missing from my export.

Check whether the recipe is marked secret. Secret recipes are always excluded from exports so they are never shared by accident. Unmark it temporarily if you meant to include it.

An image will not attach to a recipe.

Check the image format: JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, AVIF and TIFF are supported everywhere. HEIC/HEIF images are supported only on iOS and macOS, so convert them to JPG or PNG on other platforms.

I lost my recipes after reinstalling or changing devices.

Because YipYipZip stores everything locally, uninstalling the app or switching devices removes the data with it. If you have a backup file, restore it through Backup and Restore. We recommend exporting regular backups so your collection is always protected.

Where does my data live?

Only on your device. YipYipZip does not upload your recipes to any server, cloud or third-party database, which is why keeping your own backups matters.
